The Macmillan 4x4 Challenge
How it Started
In May 2000 a group of enthusiasts saw a gap in the 4x4 events programme and
Decided to introduce a new event. This event being a challenge event of 4x4 owners over a
weekend around the UK while supporting a worth while charity.
So the Mac 4x4 was born. The challenge had a rough start in life with the first two starts
being postponed , the first in November 2000 due to the petrol blockade and the second in
March 2001 due to the foot and mouth problem. March 2002 proved to be third time lucky
and event took place with eight teams starting .
With enthusiasm and quality making up for the numbers the challenge raised a magnificent
£8000 for Macmillan Cancer Relief.
From the start with a hard core of supporters developing a web site and a forum and
Supportive articles in both club and national magazines and word of mouth the event has
become well established from the 8 starting teams in 2002 the event has grown to a limit of
60 teams. There has only been one constant feature of the event and that is from the
beginning the average sponsorship from the teams has been over £1000 per team.
The amount of sponsor money raised by the teams has increased year on year it was thought
That the amount of £67,000 raised in 2006 would be a record but this figure was smashed in
2007 with a whopping total of £110,000.
The 60 places from the 2008 event were filled in just 9 days and the event proved to be an
Outstanding challenge visiting 5 country's and at the award dinner the amount raised was
Announced at £75,000. This figure has since grown to £100,000 and is still growing.
The application for 2009 opened on the evening of the 15th April 2008 and all 60 places
were full by Saturday the 19th of April.
